The Alte Bergstrasse as seen from the Hofgraben junction

Today's Alte Bergstrasse in Landsberg am Lech was the only road in Germany with left-hand traffic .

Due to the steep gradient of 18 percent, accidents with horse-drawn vehicles used to occur on the Salzstrasse . Back then, the wagoners usually walked to the left of their wagons - when driving on the right, they would meet in the middle of the street. In order to ensure the safety of the carters in the narrow Alte Bergstrasse, there was left-hand traffic, so the carters walked along the outside of the street. It was illegal to lock the front doors so that carters and pedestrians could escape into the houses from the out-of-control teams. Furthermore, stone bollards were set up downhill on the left-hand side, against which the coachmen could steer their team in an emergency. These “brake blocks” still exist today.
