Old church Fluntern

The Alte Kirche Fluntern is an Evangelical Reformed church in the city of Zurich . It is in the Fluntern quarter on the Vorderberg between Gloriastrasse and Zürichbergstrasse .

history

In 1127 the Augustinian monastery of St. Martin was built in Fluntern on the Zürichberg , which was dissolved as a result of the Reformation in 1525. In 1762, today's old church in Fluntern was built as a prayer house near the Vorderberg . In 1763 the prayer house received the first organ in a prayer house in the Zurich region. In 1862 the prayer house was converted into a church, with the building receiving its ridge turret. With only 120 seats, the church had become too small for the grown quarter at the end of the 19th century. In 1891, therefore, an extension to the west and the relocation of the entrance to the north side took place. 15 years later the planning of a large replacement building began.

After the construction of the New Church in Fluntern , the interior of the Old Church in Fluntern was removed and the room was used as a storage room and studio. The church had passed into the possession of the city of Zurich, which had ceded a large piece of land for the construction of the new church to the parish of Fluntern in an exchange. It was hoped to be able to demolish the little church in order to gain space for traffic areas or other buildings.

As a result, the Catholics tried to take over the old church for their services in Fluntern. But the municipal property management was not prepared to cede the old church to the Catholics, which is why the Catholic Church of St. Martin was built northeast of it on Krähbühlstrasse in the years 1938–1939 .

The Reformed parish used the old church in Fluntern again for its own purposes from 1935. In 1944 the building was rebuilt as a church and the east entrance of the church was bricked up. 1986–1987, the interior furnishings from the 1940s were removed and replaced with new equipment.

Building description

The Sower by Otto Münch

The old church Fluntern is located between Gloria and Zürichbergstrasse and borders on Bergstrasse in the northeast . Together with the former schoolhouse and other buildings, it forms the former hamlet of Vorderberg . Due to the topographical location, the church is not east, but faces from the northeast to the southwest. The rectangular church adjoins the gable facade of the former school building and is offset from it by a window axis. The roof turret has four dials and is crowned by a pointed helmet.

High arched windows illuminate the interior. The two glass paintings with half-length portraits of Martin Luther and Huldrych Zwingli are by Karl Wehrli from 1891. The font is from 1861, the sower relief by Otto Münch was added in 1944, the iron sculpture by Silvio Mattioli dates from 1998.

A bell in tone c hangs in the roof turret.

organ

When the first organ was installed in what was then the prayer house in 1763 , this was done for the first time in a prayer house and with the consent of the council, but with the clause not to play the instrument during the service. This first instrument was built by Johann Jakob Messmer from Rheineck SG. In 1756 the organ, with additions, was given to the Fluntern music company . In 1868 the organ was no longer playable, so it was replaced by a harmonium . The organ was sold in 1874, after which it was moved to the historical Kirschgarten Museum in Basel in 1879 . In 1892 the old church in Fluntern received its second organ. It was built by Carl Theodor Kuhn and had eight stops on two manuals including a pedal . This instrument was moved to La Forclaz / La Sage in 1943. In 1949 the Orgelbau Kuhn company built today's instrument. It has eleven registers and two transmissions on two manuals including a pedal. The organ was inaugurated on March 28, 1948.
