New church in Fluntern
The New Church Fluntern is an Evangelical Reformed church in the city of Zurich . It is located in the Fluntern district on Gellertstrasse on a terrace on the Zürichberg and with its striking front tower, visible from afar, forms the landmark of the Fluntern district.
history
Since the old church in Fluntern had become too small for the growing quarter, after years of discussion the planning for a large replacement building began around 1906. As early as 1907, a contract was signed with the city of Zurich, which provided for the exchange of the small piece of land in the old church for a large piece of land for the new building. But it took a few more years to resolve all property issues.
In 1913 a competition was held to build a new, representative Reformed church. Of the 92 drafts that were received, the one by Robert Curjel and Karl Coelestin Moser was selected and further elaborated in 1915. In the summer of 1918 the construction of the church and the rectory began. On March 21, 1920 the New Church Fluntern was consecrated. The six bells of the H. Rüetschi foundry , Aarau, were raised in the tower in May of the same year - until then the little bell of the old church rang. The bells sound in the tone sequence As ° c 'es' f' as' b 'and pick up the motif Wachet, calling us the voice with a doubled fundamental tone.
In 1954 the church was renovated and the interior was remodeled. In 1998, 2001 and 2005 the church was renovated in three stages.
Building description
The New Church of Fluntern is located on a hill and forms the center of an elegant residential area. A set of stairs leads from Gloriastrasse up to the main entrance of the church. The topography following the New Church Fluntern is not faces east , but aligned to the northeast. Its monumental, three-sided projecting front tower has a portico that rests on Ionic columns. In the tower there is a vestibule with paintings by Paul Bodmer . The interior of the church, which originally had 1,237 seats, is designed as a three-aisled complex. Corinthian columns separate the wide central nave from the two side aisles. High arched windows structure the room. Galleries are grouped around the pulpit wall and the communion table in front of it . A flat, highly sculptural coffered ceiling with rosettes and original lighting fixtures made of simple frosted glass spheres give the room its character. The neo-classical church building has largely been preserved in its original state.
The new building was given the relief of Announcer in the tympanum above the main entrance by August Suter in 1920 . Other reliefs are Wilhelm Meier 's baptism in the Jordan and the birth of Christ above the passages to the instruction room in the organ gallery. The pulpit has a two-armed staircase. Its front shows three relief figures with the titles sower and women during the grape and grain harvest by August Suter. The Lord's Supper table was also designed by Suter. It is made of polished black marble . The church's glass windows were designed by August Suter and executed by Otto Berbig. In 1934, Paul Bodmer added the painting Community by Paul Bodmer on the western gallery to the artistic interior .
organ
In 1920 the Neue Kirche Fluntern received its first instrument. It was a pneumatic pocket organ, which was built by Carl Theodor Kuhn, Männedorf. The organ had 52 sounding stops including 4 excerpts and 8 transmissions on three manuals and pedal . A fourth manual and a wind chest with four additional registers were planned, but were not implemented. In 1942 the instrument was rebuilt by Orgelbau Kuhn AG, Männedorf. 13 new registers were added. In 1968 it was converted by Maag Organ Builders , Zurich. The typical Maag solenoid valves and the Maag wind chest were installed. During this conversion, the pneumatics were also removed and replaced with electrical action . The organ now had 62 registers, 56 of which are sounding. As is often the case with Maag, the non-sounding registers are not labeled. In 1999 there was a revision by organ builder Norbert Stengele, Horgen.
