Old Church Schierke, Kirchberg 7

The Old Church Schierke was until the inauguration of the new building of the Mountain Church in 1881, the Protestant church in the village Schierke in Harz in Saxony-Anhalt . The building was last used as a day care center for Brockenkinder , for the renovation of which the city of Wernigerode received substantial funding from the federal government and the state of Saxony-Anhalt from 2010 onwards.

history

The building, located below the mountain church, a little deeper in the valley of the Warmen Bode at Kirchberg 7, was inaugurated on August 21, 1691 as the Protestant church of the Hüttenort Schierke in the county of Wernigerode . Entombments took place in Schierke from 1700. Since this church did not have a steeple, a separate belfry was built around 1730 directly on the Kirchberg.

The old church was used until the inauguration of the mountain church built according to plans by Eduard Messow from 1876 on July 17, 1881 under the pastor Arnold Emil Kluckhuhn. Her condition was very bad as early as 1864. The church stood deep in the earth, the floor lower than the surroundings . It later served as a construction shed and was leased from 1898. Initially, the former church served as a villa for the architect Karl Hantelmann from Hanover, who also had an extension carried out on the west side in place of the old school building, which was demolished in 1900 and almost completely infested with dry rot, by the Hasseröder construction company Niewerth and due to the explosion in costs for the renovation and Repair work due to dry rot infestation in the old church, which was recognized in 1899, was on the verge of financial ruin, so that in 1904 the Hantelmann'sche Villa in Schierke had to be confiscated by the court for a short time. Cyril Kiernan († 1917), Hantelmann's financially strong son-in-law living in Brazil, had another extension built in the direction of Marienweg from 1912.

In 1930 the municipality of Schierke bought back the Villa Alte Kirche property and in 1936 had an additional reclining hall built here in the style of that time. After the Second World War, a kindergarten moved into the building of the old church in 1949, which was damaged by fire in the 1950s. The belfry, however, was converted into a holiday apartment.

In 2010, around € 18,150 was invested in the new installation of the entire electrical system and water and sewage pipes for the daycare center. Between 2012 and 2014 the federal and state governments approved € 654,400 for the renovation of the day-care center. At the end of 2015, it was found that the available financial resources were insufficient. The reason given in the press was the poor condition of the building . 90% of the building was infected with dry rot and the old church was built without a foundation. At the beginning of the construction work, this damage could not have been foreseen. The city of Wernigerode then applied for a further € 660,000 from the public funding for urban redevelopment east for the third construction phase , the approval of which was still open in March 2017 and has since been granted .
