The Bergkirche Schierke is the Protestant church in the village of Schierke in the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt .

The current building was built in neo-Gothic style from granite by order of Count Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode between 1876 and 1881.

history

A previous building, located deeper in the valley, had previously been inaugurated on August 21, 1691. Entombments took place in Schierke from 1700. Since this church did not have a steeple, a separate belfry was built around 1730 . The previous church was in use as a church until the inauguration of the current church, which was built according to plans by Eduard Messow from 1876 on on July 17, 1881. It was then used as a building shed, summer apartment and guest house and has since been referred to as the Old Church . Today there is a kindergarten in the still existing building. The belfry was converted into a holiday apartment and still exists.

In 1912 a sacristy was added to the new church building . At the same time, the building received steam heating . In 1922 the mechanical organ, originally created by the Reubke company from Hausneindorf , was converted to a pneumatic function by the Ladegast company from Weißenfels . Another conversion to a baroque- style organ took place in 1938 by the Lübeck company Kemper .

On October 26, 1958, a large bell from the 14th century , bought by the community of Görsbach , was consecrated. In 2008 this was returned to Görsbach.

Today the mountain church belongs to the Protestant Christ Community of Werningerode-Schierke and is regularly used for church services.

Furnishing

The altar of today's church was made of red granite by the Schierker stone mason Wilhelm Wenzel. The pulpit , crucifix and baptismal stand were made by wood sculptor Gustav Kuntzsch from Wernigerode from oak in the neo-Gothic style. The church also has several colored glass windows that were made available by various donors.

There are two bells in the church tower. The smaller bell, weighing 450 kg, sounds in the tone b '. It is made of bronze and was cast in 1742.

A renaissance stove next to the entrance door is remarkable , the creation of which is dated between 1578 and 1616. The stove made in the Ilsenburger Hütte shows images from the parable of the prodigal son on its front . The adoration of the wise is shown on the northern side . Further representations deal with the life of Joseph .

Old baptismal implements (1691) and sacrament utensils (1730) are also in use in the church. The vases for the floral decorations on the altar are also of a considerable age.
