The Grosshorn is a mountain in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland .

location

The 3754  m above sea level. M. high summit is located approx. 14 km south of Lauterbrunnen between the Lauterbrunnen valley in the north and the Lötschental in the south. About him, the border between the running cantons of Bern and Valais and the main European watershed , which means the North drained by the White Lütschine into the river system of the Rhine to the North Sea , while the southern side of the Lonza is drained, via the Rhone in the Mediterranean flows .

About 2.5 km west of the Grosshorn is the Breithorn , with which it is connected to the west ridge, the northeast ridge leads to the also higher Mittaghorn, 2 km away . With its imposing, partly glaciated north face, the Grosshorn rises more than 2300 m above the end of the valley at Trachsellauenen and is part of the end of the valley, which extends from the Tschingelhorn in the west to the Jungfrau in the northeast.

South of the Grosshorn lies the Anunletscher , which is part of the Lang glacier's nutrient zone , and the smaller Jegigletscher . In the north there are several smaller, partly nameless slope glaciers, the largest of which is the Schmadrigletscher , which flows past the slopes of the Grosshorn and Mittaghorn east of the Schmadrihütte and reaches up to approx. 2200 m.

Routes

The little-known Grosshorn is climbed as an alpine tour from the Schmadrihütte (from the north) or the Anenhütte (from the south) over the south ridge. The latter corresponds to the normal route with difficulty level ZS . In the north wall there are more, e.g. Sometimes very difficult routes. In winter the mountain can be climbed as a ski tour destination (ZS).
