Architecture and history
The quarry stone structure in neo-Gothic style stands on the northern slope of the Teutoburg Forest . The well-known Hanoverian architect Christoph Hehl built it in 1891 on behalf of Bruno and Alwine Müller . Alwine was a daughter of the Oerlinghauser factory owner Carl David Weber . The house had a slate-roofed tower, which gave it a castle-like appearance. The vernacular therefore gave it the name Müllerburg . The Müllerburg was temporarily inhabited by well-known personalities, such as the women's rights activist Marianne Weber and the sculptor Berthold Müller-Oerlinghausen .
In 1937 the church builder Dominikus Böhm carried out a renovation , during which the tower was removed. After the Second World War , the residents first had to give way to British and later Polish and Norwegian occupation troops. In 1958 the heirs sold their villa and the associated park to the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), which initially used the house as staff accommodation for employees of the neighboring homes. Another renovation took place in 1987 and 10 separate rental apartments were created.
In 1958, the AWO built a maternity and retirement home for women in the park of the villa, which was also named Müllerburg . The new Müllerburg was expanded and has served as a retirement home for women and men since 1982 under the name Müllerburg Senior Center . After a renovation in 2011, it currently offers space for 82 people.
