Old coin in Salzwedel

The old coin was the mint in the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

In the 12th century, Salzwedel was a sovereign mint. The city acquired the right to mint in 1314 and, in a predecessor building of the building, manufactured square eyes and hollow pennies, among other things . The late Gothic brick building was built in the first half of the 14th century . The exact time of construction is not known, as the files were destroyed in a town hall fire in 1895. In the course of the beer dispute , the city lost the right to mint in 1488. From then on, the building was used by various traders and brewers . The last commercial user was the master plumber Max Pfundt , who practiced his trade in the building from 1920 to 1970. In 1970 and 1990 the building stood empty and was secured by the city. With the help of funding from the federal government, the state of Lower Saxony and the city and district of Salzwedel, the Magdeburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry reconstructed the old coin and the neighboring building and converted it into a listed building. For example, the well was uncovered, which at the time served as a water supply and was later filled. The architect also reconstructed the chimney in which the raw material for making the coins was melted. It has served as the Chamber's office since 1992. Changing exhibitions take place on the ground floor.
