Paul Williams (Bishop)

Paul Gavin Williams (born January 16, 1968 in Weston ) is a British Anglican theologian . On February 10, 2015, he was appointed Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham in the Church of England .

Life

Williams was born in Weston to Bryan Williams and his wife Heather Williams and was baptized at St Nicholas Church in Uphill . He grew up in Somerset's West County . His father was an electrical engineer ; his mother was among the first women to be ordained in the Church of England (1994). As a teenager , he had the desire to become a priest. His mother's church office had a decisive influence on his faith and his later career choice. He attended Court Fields Community School in Wellington, Somerset, and Richard Huish College in Taunton . He then studied theology at Gray College, University of Durham .

In preparation for his priesthood he attended Wycliffe Hall Theological College, a theological college of the Church of England , in Oxford . In 1992 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1993 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1992 to 1995 as Assistant Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) at St James Church in the London suburb of Muswell Hill in the Diocese of London. He was then from 1995 to 1999 pastor ( Associate Vicar ) at Christ Church in Clifton , a suburb of Bristol . There he worked in particular as a student pastor. From 1999 to 2009 he was pastor ( Rector ) at St James Church in Gerrards Cross with responsibility for the parish of St James Church in Fulmer in South Buckinghamshire . Under his leadership the number of parishioners increased significantly; the community was considered the center of religious life in the region. From 2007 to 2009 he was an Honorary Canon ( Honorary Canon ) at Christ Church Cathedral , Oxford Cathedral.

In December 2008 his appointment as "Bishop of Kensington" was announced. In March 2009, Williams was officially Suffragan Bishop of Kensington (Area Bishop of Kensington). On March 25, 2009, Williams was ordained bishop in St Paul's Cathedral by then Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams . His jurisdiction as Bishop of Kensington encompasses a total of six parishes in West London. His main areas of work include the establishment of new churches and ecclesiastical institutions, the instruction and leadership of church members, as well as school policy and religious instruction and the teaching of the faith of children and pupils in various secondary schools in West London.

In February 2015, his appointment as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham was announced. He will officially take up his post in summer 2015. He succeeds Paul Butler , Bishop of Durham in the Church of England in January 2014 , as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham .

Personal

Williams is married. His marriage to his wife Sarah resulted in three sons. Both also work as foster parents for other children. Williams' hobbies include sports , especially cricket and soccer .
