History and architecture

The magnificently designed half-timbered house was built in 1534 and 1535 by the Stolberg citizen and mint master Kilian Keßler . In the course of time it served as a mint, mining office, district court , Princely Consistory Stolberg-Stolberg and local history museum. Major restorations took place in 1843, 1990/91 and most recently in 2004. After the renovation in 2004, it was reopened as the Museum Alte Münze.

Three half-timbered storeys with an asymmetrical façade rise above a massive ground floor. The top two floors protrude further. There are arched curtain windows on the top floor . The building is characterized by a polygonal bay window . The bay window, which is also built in half-timbered construction, rests on ornate consoles and protrudes over the eaves of the house. The building is covered by a steep gable roof . The gate entrance is designed as a round arch and shows a late Gothic frame profile . Overall, the house is 23.5 m high, 18 m wide and 14 m deep.

The sleepers are provided with double valleys . There are fan rosettes on the parapets, the beam heads have clearly elaborated profiles. On the building there are the inscriptions Am tage Kiliani with gots hilfe gericht and Laus deo (German: Praise the Lord! ). On the facade there is also a braided band that is rarely found in Stolberg , which was supposed to ward off disaster. There are many other decorations, including a heart pierced by an arrow. The windows are designed as eight-pane windows typical of Stolberg.

museum

A historic minting workshop is located on the ground floor, reminding of the centuries-old tradition of minting in Stolberg. The production of coins is shown with functional equipment in all production steps from precious metal bars to the finished coin. On certain dates, a balancer is still used today in a show workshop . On the upper floors there are exhibitions on the Stolberg-born farmer's guide Thomas Münzer , the theologian and chronicler Zeitfuchs , the writer Johann Gottfried Schnabel , the history of the Stolberg region and the house of the Alte Münze itself.
