The Alte Post is a listed residential and commercial building in Krefeld . The Buschhüter -Bau is in the southwest of the city center on the corner of Dreikönigenstrasse and Steinstrasse.

History and description

The building was planned by Karl Buschhüter , who also designed other houses in Krefeld and the surrounding area, on behalf of the widow Krieger and built in 1904 in Art Nouveau style. The “Alte Post” owes its name to a post office that was originally located in the basement .

The Alte Post has been partially owned by the city of Krefeld since 1978. The company has been planning to sell the former counter hall since the end of 2012. She is aiming for a sale to the non-profit association "Kunst und Krefeld eV". The hall with adjoining ancillary and basement rooms covers around 200 square meters and, with minor exceptions, has been empty for over ten years. The Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences last used it as an exhibition space until 2002.

The building has three floors. It is located on a small square where Lindenstrasse, Steinstrasse and Dreikönigenstrasse intersect. There is a part of the facade for each. The building basically consists of two individual houses that merge to form the Alte Post. There are accordingly two separate entrances. The basement floor is equipped with green Anröchter dolomite , the floors above, including the gable, which is located at the head of Lindenstrasse, are clad with tuff . The building has a gable roof made of slate with a ring-shaped crown. The corner bay windows extend across floors, as are the vertical windows, and end up in small turrets. Also special are the details worked in by Karl Buschhüter, which, in addition to various decorations, also include a large eagle with spread wings made of ashlar above the gate entrance to the former parcel delivery point of the post office on Dreikönigenstrasse.

The Alte Post is registered under number 61 as an architectural monument in the list of monuments of the city of Krefeld .
