Old government in Minden

The old government is the former government building of the Minden district government in the East Westphalian city of Minden and is located at the large cathedral courtyard opposite the Minden cathedral.

Building history

The administration for the Prussian Principality of Minden was housed in Schloss Petershagen until 1669 . In 1669 the officials moved to Minden. The administration took its seat in the former episcopal court directly at Minden Cathedral . From 1722 the War and Domain Chamber was responsible for the whole of Minden-Ravensberg and was primarily active as a judicial authority. From 1816 the administration was called government and was responsible for the new administrative district of Minden .

The prince-bishop's court was expanded and rebuilt soon after the administration moved in. From 1826 the seat of government was extended to the neighboring building (Großer Domhof 2) and this building was increased in 1832. From 1869 the former curia building to the north was also included. The current building with the characteristic tower mainly dates from 1846/48. The new building had become necessary because the original episcopal courtyard, which was directly attached to the cathedral, was badly damaged by a fire in 1842. After that, the building was no longer attached directly to the cathedral, so that a lane and connection from the small cathedral courtyard west to the large cathedral courtyard north of the Minden cathedral was created.

In 1907 the government of the administrative district of Minden moved into a new building on Weserglacis, which was known as the " New Government ". The former seat, now the "Old Government", was the seat of the Stadtsparkasse Minden from 1908 to 1928 . The main building was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt after the war, slightly modified, under the direction of the architect Werner March . At that time the tower received its characteristic clock tower with an onion dome. In the 1970s it was connected to the neighboring new building of the Minden town hall, the so-called Deilmannbau . Parts of the city administration are housed in the old government to this day. The building is entered in the list of monuments of the city of Minden .

monument

In front of the old government there is a victory column to celebrate the Prussian victories in the German-Danish War of 1864 and the German-German War of 1866 and to commemorate the fallen from the Minden administrative district. The victory column is crowned by a Prussian bronze eagle. At the base of the column there are bronze plates with the fallen of the wars, including members of the infantry regiment "Graf Bülow von Dennewitz" (6th Westphalian) No. 55 . Cannon barrels are set up to the side of the column. The monument was inaugurated on July 3, 1868 and restored in 1997.
