Old Synagogue (Cottbus)
The Old Synagogue was a synagogue in Cottbus at today's Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 132.
The Jewish sacred building was built for 300 worshipers and inaugurated on September 16, 1902. The synagogue fell victim to the November pogroms in 1938 and its ruins were later torn down. A department store was built on the former synagogue site in the 1960s. In 1999, a memorial plaque designed by the Cottbus graphic artist Dieter Nemitz was placed on the west side of the department store, which contains a quote from the former regional rabbi Martin Riesenburger :
"Who promotes peace, who creates peace, who fights for it and loves it, will bring new happiness and peace into the world."
