Old Synagogue (Hameln)
The old synagogue in Hameln , a town in the Hameln-Pyrmont district in Lower Saxony , was built in 1878/79. The synagogue was on Bürenstrasse.
description
The monumental building in neo-Romanesque style was built according to plans by the architect Edwin Oppler . The synagogue offered space for 300 worshipers.
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by SA and SS men from Hamelin . The neighboring houses were protected by the fire brigade. The synagogue building burned to the ground and the ruins were removed shortly afterwards.
In 2001, the Liberal Jewish Community of Hameln , founded in 1997, acquired the former synagogue property and built the New Hameln Synagogue on it in 2011 according to plans by architect Frank Taylor .
