Old Synagogue in Kitzingen (from Brockhaus and Efron Jewish Encyclopedia , 1906–1913)

The old synagogue in Kitzingen , a town in the Kitzingen district in northern Bavaria , was built in the 16th century and destroyed by bombing during World War II (on February 23, 1945). The synagogue was located at No. 6 Oberen Bachgasse. Only remnants of the south wall of the synagogue, which was last used as a residential building, remained after 1945.

description

From Naphtalie Bamberger, Geschichte der Juden von Kitzingen (p. 13): “The synagogue stood directly behind the city moat, near the monastery wall on a fairly high place and is still identified and recognizable as such with the name 'Judentempel' . The house no. 6 in the upper Bachgasse is to be regarded most definitely as the synagogue from that time and has been identified as such. The design of the whole house and its ancillary rooms suggests the prosperity and sacrifice of the Jewish residents of the time. The largest room, which made up the men's synagogue, was about 6 1/2 m long and 4 1/2 m wide. The walls were built very solidly and show symmetrically arranged square niches, which in any case were distorted. In the middle of the east wall (Main side) there is a particularly deep niche in which certain of the Oraunhakodesch (Torah shrine) stood. In the south wall, where the entrance to the men's synagogue was located, a poor box was placed right next to the entrance; It was a hollow stone, the opening of which was closed with a small lattice door. At a height of approx. 3 1/2 m you can still see a solid, wide stone cornice that runs around all four walls. The women's gallery rested on it. Even if the whole building has been converted into a residential house, its external pointed shape still shows the peculiarities by which one can recognize synagogues from the 16th century. Until 15 years ago, the deepening of the ritual bath could be seen in the cellar under the synagogue. In all likelihood, the Jews lived near the house of God, as various files show that they were only allowed to settle behind the monastery wall. "
