Old guard at the armory

The Alte Wache at the Zeughaus is one of the few classicist buildings that have been preserved or rebuilt from the beginning of the Prussian period in Cologne . It is opposite the regional council on Zeughausstrasse. With the old armory it is connected Duch a connecting structure; the entire building complex houses the Cologne City Museum , with the Alte Wache being used for temporary exhibitions.

Building history

The building was one of three new guard buildings that the Prussian military administration had built in agreement with the city in 1840/41. The larger Hauptwache on the Heumarkt was demolished in 1877 , a portico of the guard on Waidmarkt next to the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium remained until the collapse of the Historical Archives in Severinstrasse during the construction of the north-south light rail in March 2009. The plans for the guard buildings came from the architect on the square , the major engineer Schuberth, but the details were changed. The guard at the armory was planned in the so-called Florentine style and provided for 30 soldiers. During the Second World War , the building was destroyed except for the outer walls, but could be rebuilt in 1957/58. Initially, it took up the collections of the Roman-Germanic Museum until it was given its own building.
