The old Protestant church in Saarbrücken is a church building in the center of the city. The church is a listed building.

history

Under pressure from the French King Louis XIV , the St. John 's Chapel, which had become Protestant during the Reformation, had to be left to the Catholics. The Protestant believers in the then independent town of St. Johann now had to attend church services in the Protestant Saarbrücken Castle Church . Count Karl Ludwig von Nassau-Saarbrücken promoted the construction of a new church so that the Protestant town had its own church . The foundation stone for the Protestant church in St. Johann was laid after the sudden death of the count, however, under the rule of Count Friedrich Ludwig von Nassau-Ottweiler . The church of St. Johannes was built between 1725 and 1727 according to plans by the architect Jost Bager and received from the Saarbrücken master carpenter Paulus Bucklisch the Elder. Ä. a baroque spire. In 1753/54 the church building was extended by a sacristy, in 1775 it was rebuilt and received new stalls.

In the 19th century the church was no longer sufficient for the growing community. The representative neo-Gothic St. John's Church was built from 1894 to 1898 . Since then the old church has only played a subordinate role.

After being damaged in the Second World War, the structure collapsed in the winter of 1945/46. The architect Rudolf Krüger led the reconstruction of the church from 1950 to 1953, but changed the outside of the building slightly and created new rooms inside. Krüger moved two solid ceilings into the hall and set up multi-purpose rooms. It was also he who added a community center to the church in 1960. In 1995 a lightning strike damaged the building. Since 1995 the church has only been used for special services.

architecture

The east-facing hall building with a gable roof has a portal on the west side, which lies in an almost completely drawn-in tower made of sandstone. The arched entrance with an accentuated keystone lies in a simple portal without any large decorations. It is protected by a small copper roof. The facade is plastered to the left and right of the tower and thus visually highlights the unplastered tower. A square window on the ground floor, a large, rectangular window on the first floor and an oculus above are strictly symmetrical on each side. The gable is visually separated from the rest of the facade by a cornice with a roof. In front of the baroque dome sits a small triangular gable with a clock.

The nave has six window axes that are divided into two parts. In the lower area there is an almost square window with a sandstone reveal. Raised windows with round arches are attached above. On the north side there is a portal in the west, which is flanked by pilasters that support an entablature with a straight roof. An oculus sits high above it. The rectangular hall is closed in the east by a choir with a three-sided end.

Until the church was destroyed, the pulpit was placed in front of the straight wall of the choir. Galleries formed a horseshoe around the room. Originally the two portals were in the middle of the nave.

The architect and glass painter György Lehoczky designed six windows of the church in 1953.
