The Altenplathower or Altenplatower Altkanal ( AAK ) is a waterway in eastern Saxony-Anhalt in the urban area of Genthins .

description

The Altenplathower Altkanal, like the Rossdorf Altkanal to the east of Genthins, is a section of the former Plauer Canal , which was built between 1743 and 1745 . The Plauer Canal initially had a width of 10 to 15 meters, a depth of 1.10 meters to 1.25 meters, so that it was used by ships with a length of 36.10 meters, a width of up to 4.00 meters and a draft of up to 0.90 meters could be driven. The carrying capacity of these ships was around 50 tons. In the 19th century the Plauer Canal was expanded twice. First from 1862 to 1866 and then from 1883 to 1891, so that the width was 26.00 meters and the depth was 2.00 meters. This enabled the waterway that connected the Havel with the Elbe to be navigated with maximum ship sizes of 65.00 meters in length, 8.00 meters in width and 1.60 meters in draft. Such ships had a carrying capacity of around 600 tons. Between 1926 and 1938, the Plauer Canal and the Ihle Canal were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel Canal over long distances . With this expansion, new, more straight lines were chosen over stretches, so that several old sewers were created.

The old canal is a federal waterway and a secondary waterway. It branches off west of Genthins to the north from the Elbe-Havel Canal, has an arched course and joins it again south of the Altenplathow district . The AAK is in the area of responsibility of the Genthin suburb of the Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office .

The passage is only permitted for sport and leisure boating. The canal is spanned by a bridge, the Hagenbrücke at 1.670 km. It crosses a local road . In the canal, the draft is limited to 1.0 meters.
