Old Wittenberg train station
The old Wittenberg station is one of the oldest preserved former station reception buildings in Germany. It is located at 31 Am Alten Bahnhof in Lutherstadt Wittenberg .

The old Wittenberg station was created with the construction of the Anhalter Bahn . On August 28, 1841, the Wittenberg – Coswig line was opened. This was the first day of rail traffic in Wittenberg. The station was inaugurated on September 10, 1841 with the commissioning of the entire Anhalter Bahn line between Berlin and Köthen "with great sympathy from the population and with a feast for celebrities".
The route in Wittenberg was different from today. It ran north of the city wall outside the fortress structures at that time: Coming from the railway line from Berlin roughly along today's Annendorfer Strasse, Schillerstrasse, Zeppelinstrasse, Friedrich-Engels-Strasse, Melanchthonstrasse, Hans-Lufft-Strasse and north past the reception building of the old Wittenberg station, to today's Lutherstadt Wittenberg West train station.
The half-timbered building was built around 600 meters from the castle gate. In addition to the reception building with guest and utility rooms, other buildings and facilities were built on the railway site: a hall on the western gable of the reception building, garden parlor, bowling alley, carriage shed, horse stable, greenhouse.
With the opening of the Wittenberg – Halle line in 1859 and the necessary crossing of the Elbe, the route in Wittenberg was changed and a new train station was built east of the Elstertor. This made today's old station superfluous. The Berlin-Anhalt Railway Company offered it for sale. On March 26, 1860, the station building, which was no longer in use, was sold to a master mason for 6,500 thalers . Since then it has been used for a variety of purposes, primarily as a residential building.
The old station was already placed under monument protection in the GDR . After years of neglect, it is now (2012) structurally secured. The building can only be viewed from the outside.
