history

Until the 19th century, cemeteries were usually laid out as resting places around the respective parish churches . Because of population growth and hygiene reasons, cemeteries were laid out outside the cities at the end of the 18th century. In the general land law for the Prussian states this became mandatory. In Bielefeld, the church yards of the old town Nicolaikirche and Neustädter Marienkirche were no longer sufficient around 1800. The odor nuisance and modernization efforts during the time of the Rhine Confederation led to the closure of these burial sites in 1808. In the same year it was decided to create the cemetery outside the city limits at that time. At that time it was 14,500 m². With the construction of the Johannisfriedhofs (1874) and the Nicolaifriedhofs (1875), the facility, called the Old Cemetery from 1874, was no longer intended as a burial site, but was not de-dedicated either. On application, people from Bielefeld were allowed to be buried here, and apparently the wishes of relatives were so widespread that the cemetery even had to be enlarged. With a little over 16,000 m², it reached its greatest extent in 1893. However, in the following decades, there was a steady reduction in size. These concerned in particular the expansion of the adjacent streets, but above all the construction of the House of Technology on Jahnplatz in 1928. Due to its importance in the history of the city, the old cemetery was entered in the list of monuments in 1986. On the one hand it was an important park at that time, on the other hand it was also affected by vandalism. In 2000 the city administration decided to operate the cemetery again and founded a municipal cemetery GmbH, which also took care of the maintenance of the area. The cemetery was fenced in and has been closed at night ever since. In the following years a new chapel, new graves and a columbarium were built .
