Old Cemetery (Bo'ness)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Old Cemetery of Bo'ness is a cemetery with a formerly attached church in the Scottish town of Bo'ness in the Council Area Falkirk . In 1980 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest category A took place in 2004.

history

A church was built on this site in 1634, which initially came under the jurisdiction of the parish of Kinneil House . In 1669 it became a parish church. William Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton , had a ship added in 1672 . In 1775 the church was rebuilt; again in 1820. In 1887 the building was sold to the Scottish Episcopal Church and finally abandoned in 1915 and sold to a businessman who had it converted into a cinema. The architect Matthew Steele , who is responsible for several formative buildings in Bo'ness, was commissioned with the planning (see also The Hippodrome ). In the 1960s, the building was used as a bingo room and was eventually converted into a residential building in the 1990s.

description

The cemetery is located near the coast in the north of Bo'ness. It consists of two sections; the western, lower, and the left, higher. Both parts are separated from each other by Church Wynd Street . The cemeteries were surrounded by simple quarry stone walls. Numerous ornamented gravestones, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, can be found in the cemeteries. They often show nautical motifs. Some are monumentally worked with elaborate friezes and pilasters .
