Kilsyth Old Cemetery

The old cemetery of Kilsyth is located in the Scottish city of Kilsyth . It's on the southern edge of town on Howe Road . In 1971 the cemetery was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

history

The old churchyard was directly adjacent to the Monyabroch Parish Church . The building, dating from 1560, offered space for 600 people. In order to take account of the steadily growing community, the Kilsyth Parish Church , which is still in use today, was built in 1812 about 600 m north . This does not have its own cemetery. In the course of time, extensions to the west were added to the old cemetery.

mausoleum

In the northern part of the cemetery, at the former site of Monyabroch Kirk, there is a mausoleum in the form of an octagonal tower with a tent roof . There the remains of Jean Cochrane, Viscountess of Dundee , wife of William Livingstone of Kilsyth , and their son William were interred. Cochrane was the daughter of William Cochrane, Lord Cochrane († 1679) and granddaughter of the 1st Earl of Dundonald . Her first husband, John Graham, 1st Viscount of Dundee , died in 1689 at the Battle of Killiecrankie . She later married William Livingston. In October 1695, the roof of the house where the couple was staying with their son and nanny in the Netherlands collapsed. Livingston was happily saved, whereas the others present could no longer be saved alive. Jean Cochrane and her son were embalmed, brought to Kilsyth, and buried in the vaults of Monyabroch Kirk. A hundred years later, the tomb was accidentally opened and the condition of the mummies was described as unexpectedly good. After the church building was demolished, the crypt was closed with the tower that can be found today. In 2008 the structure was added to the Scottish List of Endangered Listed Structures. The condition is classified as bad, but the risk is classified as low. Inside, several floor boards are missing and empty bottles and rubbish are piling up.
