The Hesse Veterinary Border Control (TGSH) at Frankfurt Airport is organizationally part of the Hessian State Laboratory. It is responsible for food, animal disease and animal welfare controls during the import, export and transit of animals and goods via Frankfurt am Main Airport . At this largest border inspection post in Europe, around 60,000 consignments of live animals, animal products and plant-based foods are inspected on the basis of European and national legislation. These arrive in the European Union as freight, in luggage and as parcels.

In the animal station, vets and TGSH employees examine animals from all over the world. In 2011 around 20,500 animal consignments with around 109,900 animals were handled. These included farm animals such as pigs, cattle and bees as well as pets such as cats, dogs, birds and ornamental fish. All animals are only allowed to enter from non-EU member states with valid health certificates. The exclusion of animal diseases or the determination of possible causes of death is carried out in the veterinary medicine department of the Hessian State Laboratory.
