history

After the Reformation, a church was built in Kilsyth in 1560. This was located in the old cemetery Kilsyths about 600 m south and offered space for 600 people. After a conflict that simmered for decades, the congregation split from the Church of Scotland and turned to Relief Church . Due to the growing number of churchgoers, a new building was necessary at the beginning of the 19th century. Today's Kilsyth Parish Church was completed in 1812 and seats 793 people. As an architect, a Mr. Shepherd was responsible for the planning. The large landowner Charles Edmonston donated the bell tower . In 1835 the lighting was switched from oil lamps to gas lighting. Archibald Edmonston donated the pulpit in 1880 and the harmonium was installed six years later , a gift from G. A. Whitelaw.

Surrounding lands were bought in 1889 and a community hall was built on them in 1901. In the 1920s, H. Stenhouse donated an extension to the community hall. In 1929 the church reunited with the Church of Scotland. In 1932 parts of the interior were renewed. For the 150th anniversary of the building, the staircase leading to the gallery was renewed and the vestibule was extensively renovated . In 1975, today's Kilsyth Parish Church was merged with Burns Church to form Kilsyth Burns and Old Parish Church. The ornate windows of Burns Church were subsequently integrated into Kilsyth Parish Church. The old Burns Church was finally demolished in 2002. Their bell is in front of Kilsyth Parish Church today. Nearby, a stone marks the place of death of a covenanter from the Battle of Kilsyth in 1645. A modern sound system was installed in 2007.
