The Old Cemetery of Lhanbryde is a cemetery in the Scottish village of Lhanbryde in the Council Area Moray . In 1988 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. The located in the cemetery crypt Innes Enclosure is, however, listed as a monument of the highest monument category A.

history

There was a Brigidenkirche at the location . It was first mentioned at the beginning of the 13th century by Brice de Douglas , Bishop of Moray . Until the amalgamation of two parishes in 1780 or 1782, it served as Lhanbryde's parish church . After the merger, it became obsolete and fell into disrepair. Today there are no remains of the medieval church.

graveyard

The old Lhanbryde cemetery covers an area of around 0.2  hectares . It is located on a slight slope in the center of the village between Walkers Crescent and St Andrew's Road . A wall made of irregular stone blocks surrounds the almost square area. There are graves from the 16th to 18th centuries in the cemetery. Entrances are on the north and south sides. Based on the execution of their gate pillars, a revision in the late 19th century is assumed. Beyond the south gate, a wide staircase leads to the level of the cemetery. The old cemetery is no longer in use today.

Inner enclosure

The Innes Enclosure is the family crypt of the Innes of Coxton (see Coxton Tower ). Elements of the old church were probably integrated into the brickwork of roughly hewn quarry stone of the square building on the eastern edge of the cemetery. Building openings are set off with polished natural stone. A cast iron gate on the west facade leads into the interior. There are two blackboards placed there. Presumably these are grave slabs that were brought to this place. They show images of knights and bear the dates 1580 and 1612 respectively. The latter shows Alexander Innes of Coxton .
