Herford old cemetery
The old cemetery is a listed facility in Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia .
History and architecture
Until 1808 the citizens of the old town , the Radewig , the abbey and the peasantry belonging to Herford were buried on the Münsterkirchplatz. There were also cemeteries at the other churches. Against the resistance of the population, the inner-city burial grounds were closed during the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia (1807–1813) and a new, rationally planned cemetery on Eisgraben (today Friedhofstrasse) was opened.
This older part of the so-called “Old Cemetery”, laid out north of Hermannstrasse in 1808, was the first communal cemetery in the city of Herford. Among the numerous tombs there is a large inventory from the first half of the 19th century. Some older stones from the Renaissance and Baroque periods come from the abandoned cemetery on Münsterkirchplatz. The war memorial for the fallen soldiers of the German-Danish War , the Prussian War against Austria and the Franco-German War , depicting an angel with a dead soldier, was created by Heinrich Wefing in 1879 . It was on the old market until 1964. There have been no burials on the old part since 1874.
The younger part south of Hermannstrasse, where funerals are still carried out today, was landscaped in 1873 as a regular complex with square fields and avenues . The monumental cross in the middle, labeled 1873, is surrounded by particularly rich hereditary burials . The neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1891.
In addition to the old stock of trees, both systems impress with the character of the numerous old monuments. The old part, which merges into the neighboring Aawiesenpark, is very popular for strollers looking for a place to rest.
To the east of the younger part of the cemetery is the Herford Jewish cemetery .
The main cemetery in Herford is now the Eternal Peace Cemetery .
