The old church tower of Tawern

The old church tower is the tower of the former Roman Catholic parish church of Tawern ( Trier-Saarburg district ) in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

Tawern was mentioned for the first time in a document from Archbishop Ludolf von Trier from the year 1000 about a gift of an allod with the associated church lease to the St. Marien monastery near Trier. In 1030 Archbishop Poppo confirmed that the monastery owned the land lease of the mother church in Tawern, which was donated to the Kyllburg Monastery in 1280 . The east tower of the church, a Romanesque choir tower , which is dated to the 13th century, dates from this time .

The old church was dilapidated in 1743 and was rebuilt from 1744 to 1746 except for the tower. An extension to the west took place in 1854. This building no longer met the requirements and was replaced in 1907/08 by the new parish church of St. Peter and Paul further east on the outskirts. Only the former choir tower, which is now a listed building, has been preserved.
