The old market in Bielefeld is the historical center of the old town . Several old town houses were located on it , of which only the facade of the Battig House , dated 1680, has survived today. After war damage, it was integrated into the new building of the Lampe Bank . Although it was only created in the Baroque period, it still has characteristics of the Weser Renaissance . At the neighboring house (No. 5), the gable of the war-damaged house at Obernstrasse 29 was used in 1976, which was demolished in 1962 and then stored in the municipal building yard for years. The Crüwell House at the western end of the market with a late Gothic stepped gable dates from 1530. The north side is occupied by the former Old Town Hall, now called the Brückehaus . Among other things, the Theater am Alten Markt (TAM) is located here. The building, rebuilt after the war, still contains remains of the late medieval building.
Obernstrasse , which once ended at Oberntor, and Niedernstrasse, which today ends at the important traffic junction Jahnplatz , begin at the Alter Markt . Both streets were used by tram line 1 from 1900 to 1927 . This drove a short stretch across the square with a sharp curve.
From 1963 to 2005 the Merkurbrunnen was on the old market. It was implemented as part of the redesign of the pedestrian zone on Bunnemannplatz in front of the Hotel Mercure. A new fountain was built in place of the Mercury fountain. Several cafes with outdoor dining make the square one of the most popular in the city. In the run-up to Christmas it houses the central part of the Bielefeld Christmas market and a flower market on Saturdays.
Gothic, baroque, one gable designed and one implemented by Paul Griesser (1980)
