The square, known today as the Alter Markt , is located south of the market square and was one of the first settlement centers in the city of Halle (Saale) . From the 11th century on there was a long-distance traders' settlement, which had a fortification around 1100. Hall's first town hall and, with the Michaelis Chapel, which no longer exists today, was the city's first parish church at the old market .

On the Alter Markt, the long-distance trade route from Lübeck and Magdeburg to southern Germany (east side of the square) connected with the road via Eisleben to western Germany.

The edges of the room give the square a triangular, almost T-shaped structure that is probably unique for its time. The peripheral development is z. Some of them from the high Middle Ages. There are also facades from the Renaissance , Baroque and Classicism periods . The square had a public fountain since 1480. In the middle of the square stands the donkey fountain by Heinrich Keiling, which was erected in 1913 and is reminiscent of a well-known Halle legend.

The buildings on the Alter Markt include:

  • the oldest building on the square (numbers 7 and 8) from the core of the late Romanesque period (late 12th / early 13th century), housed the inn "To the three crowns" in the 16th century
  • a half-timbered house , built around 1600 in the Lower Saxony half-timbered style (number 31),
  • the former inn "Zum golden Pflug" (number 27) built in 1605,
  • a baroque style town house built in 1705 (number 12), today houses the Beatles Museum .
