Old Packhof (Magdeburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alte Packhof was a warehouse with a castle-like design on the banks of the Elbe in Magdeburg .

The splendidly designed baroque building was erected between 1729 and 1731 based on designs by the engineer captain Preusser . The estimated costs for the construction amounted to 20,000 thalers , with 6,000 thalers being borne by the state of Prussia . The construction of this new warehouse had become necessary due to the sharp increase in goods traffic on the Elbe.

The castle-like design corresponded to the representational needs of the Magdeburg merchants. The building had 31 window axes over its length. There were two elaborately designed portals as well as three gables , which were decorated with figures and stone vases.

During the Second World War , the building was destroyed by bombing and was not rebuilt later. Today there is a green area belonging to the Elbe promenade at this point.
