Old slaughterhouse

The old slaughterhouse at Würzburger Straße 5 in Walldürn is a former slaughterhouse that has been converted into a youth and cultural center.

Prehistory and construction

In 1875, the city of Walldürn received an order from the district office to build a slaughterhouse for the then eight local butchers. Because of the financial outlay, the city administration initially offered resistance, but in 1882 the decision was made to build the slaughterhouse near a mill in the Marsbach valley. This plan was rejected by a citizens' committee. In 1895 it was finally decided to build the slaughterhouse on the road to Hardheim opposite the pumping station of the municipal water pipe. A trade teacher Kuhn was to draw up the plans. Eventually the building was erected by the entrepreneurs Bonn and Schneider. For this purpose the city of Walldürn raised a capital of 18,000 marks.

The slaughterhouse had a main building faced with sandstone , which was divided into three large rooms: a slaughter room for large cattle, a tripe and a slaughter room for smaller animals.

Use as a slaughterhouse

The slaughterhouse was initially used by seven local butchers. Around 1900 around 250 large cattle, 150 calves, 500 pigs, 100 sheep and ten goats and kid kids were slaughtered each year.

In the 1940s, the slaughterhouse was expanded to include stable buildings and a room each for staff and veterinarians . In 1954 another cold room followed .

On December 31, 1992 the municipal slaughterhouse Walldürn was closed after the upcoming renovations could not be financed according to the new EC guidelines. The costs would have been around 8,000,000 DM.

Later use

After the slaughterhouse was closed, the building was initially used as a warehouse for the municipal building yard. In 1998 an idea competition for the redesign of the area was announced after various youth facilities in Walldürn had been lost due to the inner city renovation. On May 8, 1998, the Kirchheim architect Ulrich Gauk was awarded first place. The former slaughterhouse was redesigned in a project partnership with the architects Thomas Link (Walldürn) and Uwe Schmitt (Waldbrunn), both of whom were also among the winners of the competition.

The stable buildings had to be demolished because of their unsuitable floor plans and room heights. The three rooms of the main building were converted into an event hall; the partition walls were replaced by steel beams. The building services technology was housed in the attic of the cellarless building. A transparent foyer created the connection with the newly erected massive outbuilding, in which the youth café, youth club, rehearsal rooms etc. could be found. An outdoor area with a wooden terrace completed the ensemble.

In order to protect the environment, all of the outdoor surfaces were made water-permeable and the roofs of the new buildings were greened.

The youth and culture center was opened in March 2002.
