The Alte Schlachthof is a former slaughterhouse on Rotenbergplatz in Eupen , directly on the right bank of the Stadtbach in the southwest of the city center.

description

The complex comprised several buildings and was built from 1901 to 1903 in the Prussian industrial style on behalf of the city; the architect was Walter Frese from Düren . The complex also included a wing for a waste treatment plant and an ice house. In 1907 the skin processing and butcher's trade association was founded, which was based there.

In the street front of the former administration building, the sculpture of the Eupen city coat of arms is mounted in a rectangular upright field. Until 1920, the Prussian eagle was still in the upper part of the wall field, which grew out of the middle tower of the wall crown. By decree of September 30, 1920 by the high royal commissioner and governor Herman Baltia , this heraldic animal was removed.

The old slaughterhouse was closed in 1991 and converted into a cultural center and event location between 1992 and 2015 in several construction phases according to plans by the Liège architect Daniel Dethier and with funding from the Tilia Autonomous Community, the city of Eupen and the German-speaking community . In addition, as part of a training and integration project, the cultivation of organic vegetables and fruit was made possible on the site and is sold in the affiliated fair-trade farm shop .
