Walter de Gregorio

Walter de Gregorio (born January 25, 1965 in Frick ) is a Swiss journalist and former head of communications for the football association FIFA .

Walter de Gregorio has both Swiss citizenship and Italian citizenship . He worked as a freelance journalist for various newspapers and magazines. He was a correspondent in Rome for the SonntagsZeitung , Die Zeit and Weltwoche , after which he was head of sports and a member of the editorial board of the Swiss tabloid Blick . Until 2011, de Gregorio worked as a freelance journalist, but had a permanent position with a focus on Italy at the Tages-Anzeiger magazine and a weekly sports column in Weltwoche. In 2010 he was named “Sports Journalist of the Year” in Switzerland for the column.

In April 2011, de Gregorio became an advisor to FIFA President Blatter. On October 1, 2011, he became Director of Communications and Public Relations at FIFA.

After several FIFA officials were arrested on May 27, 2015 in the course of an investigation into corruption at FIFA , Gregorio came under pressure as a result of making a few careless statements. On June 11, 2015, after a controversial television interview, he resigned from his position with immediate effect, but declared that he would continue to be available as an advisor to FIFA until the end of the year.
