The old water tower was in Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia , on the Annakirmesplatz .

history

On April 9, 1884, the city received the sovereign permission to issue a four percent city bond to finance the facility, and on June 9, 1884, the groundbreaking ceremony for the waterworks with water tower according to the plans of the Aachen professors Otto Intze and Heinrich Friedrich Damert was done become. The water extraction was realized in the immediate vicinity of the city from a 4.30 m thick layer of gravel to the right of the Rur , where a groundwater flow towards the city existed on an almost 10 m thick layer of clay . The water was collected in slotted iron tubes 30-40 cm in diameter, which ran about 4 m below the surface.

The water collected in a 4 m deep well next to the water tower and was pumped from there through risers with the help of two gas engines into the actual 550 m³ water reservoir of the tower. With a diameter of 15.40 m at the bottom, the tower had a height of 50 m and thus became a new landmark of the city of Düren.

The waterworks officially began operating on July 25, 1885. Two main lines led from the water tower to the market, from where further distribution was carried out.

The tower, badly damaged in World War II , was laid down on November 7, 1951.
