In contrast to the kingdoms of Württemberg and Bavaria , where the state actively established state-wide history societies, this did not happen in the Grand Duchy of Baden . On the initiative of August von Bayer , the Antiquities Association for the Grand Duchy of Baden was founded in Baden-Baden on February 17, 1844 , and it was active until 1858. The Baarverein , which was revived in Donaueschingen in 1842 , joined this association as a branch association.
