The old post office SW 61 (named after the instructions of the Imperial General Post Office from 1873 to the Berlin post office districts ) is a listed commercial building in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg on Tempelhofer Ufer 1 there. It was built by the architect and post office building officer Hermann Struve in the years 1900 to Erected in 1902.

The building, built in a neo - Gothic style, was designed by Hermann Struve (1857–1916) from 1900 to 1902 as a four-storey complex with two inner courtyards with glass roofs. The facade was faced with red clinker bricks. The gable designs and the variously shaped windows are particularly striking . You can find classic-looking pointed arch windows as well as more modern box windows. There are also some coupled arched windows.

In the 20th century, the architectural contrast to the Hallesches Tor underground station exactly opposite is particularly impressive . On one side of the Landwehr Canal is the historicizing facade of the post office, on the other side the technically modern train station. It must be taken into account that the train station, which was built at the same time by the architects Hermann Solf and Franz Wichards, was badly damaged by numerous bombs during World War II . In 1949 it was rebuilt in a much simplified form. Direct links to the post office then there is a 1890 in the late years, shortly before the construction of the post office, from Adolf Jandorf built and later decades by the company Hertie -occupied department store, which then as domain- now than Poco furniture store is operated . In particular, however, the changed situation after the completion of the southern part of the former Belle-Alliance-Platz after the Second World War is noticeable up to the present day as a severe urban impoverishment.

Younger story

The counter hall has not been used by the post office since the 1990s. Since then, the building has made a name for itself as a hostel for various underground clubs (Pirate Cove and Horst Krzbrg) , with some drastic effects on the building fabric . Fortunately, the counter hall was extensively renovated in the 2010s and the original skylights were reinstalled. The rooms are now open to the public as the Hallesches Haus restaurant . A digital agency has now moved into the first floor of the building.
