Old Town Hall

The old town hall is a listed building at Hauptmarkt 1 in Gotha and the city’s historic town hall . Because of its red facade color, the building is unofficially called the Red City Hall .

architecture

The building is in the style of the Renaissance and since a renovation at the end of the 19th century also shows influences of the Neo-Renaissance . The portal on the north side, created around 1850 as part of a building renovation, is decorated with portraits of Ernestine dukes, the entrance on the west side shows the coat of arms of the sovereigns.

The building has a 35 meter high tower, which has had a viewing platform since the renovation in 1997 and is accessible.

Inside the building, the previous (lord) mayors of the city from the time of National Socialism through the time of the SED dictatorship to the present day are shown in individual portraits. In the former council chamber there is a relief of the Elector Johann Friedrich I.

history

The building was erected in 1567-77 according to plans by the builders Caspar Mans , Christoph Goetze and Nicolaus Rausch in place of a wooden predecessor. It initially served as a department store . From 1640 to 1646 it was the residence of the first Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg , Ernst I , until he moved to Friedenstein Castle, which was built at his behest . After the town fire in 1665, it was rebuilt and converted into a town hall under master builder Rudolphi. The large council chamber on the second floor was created in 1852.

In 1897–98 the interior of the building and the facade were redesigned in the neo-renaissance style. The building survived the Second World War and the air raids on Gotha largely unscathed. In 1994–98 the building was completely renovated. Today it houses the office of the mayor and some offices of the city administration. The former Schlosshotel Gotha at Ekhofplatz 24 serves as the new town hall and the seat of the majority of Gotha's city administration .
