location

The eastern part of the old town hall with the former administration and representation rooms is located at Lucas-Cranach-Straße 19 in Kronach. The building extends in an east-west direction as far as Amtsgerichtsstrasse, which runs parallel to Lucas-Cranach-Strasse, where a small square is in front of the western part of the building.

History and description of the building

Much of the old town hall was built during the 16th century. The basement of the west building, which previously served as a market hall , was probably built in 1512. The east part of the building with its renaissance facade was largely built in 1583. The plans for this probably come from the builder Daniel Engelhardt , who was also involved in the expansion of the Rosenberg fortress above the old town in Kronach . The portal on the east side was added to the facade around 1600. It is flanked by two Ionic columns , above which are the sculptures of two completely hairy beings, the "Wild Man" and the "Wild Woman". Between the two sculptures is a sandstone relief with the coat of arms of the Bamberg prince-bishop Johann Philipp von Gebsattel , which is flanked by the coat of arms of the city of Kronach and the governor Hans Veit II. Von Würtzburg . Two dolphins serve as shield holders .

The Kronach city coat of arms has the shape as it was used before 1651. This year, Prince-Bishop Melchior Otto Voit of Salzburg awarded the city a new coat of arms in honor of the bravery of its residents in the defense of Kronach during the Thirty Years' War . A representation of this new city coat of arms can be seen in the upper area of the west facade of the building. This upper part of the west building was built in 1726, but the plans for this go back to 1661. Various conversions were also carried out in the interior of the eastern part in 1726. Further major renovations, including increasing the entrance portal and replacing the outside doors, took place in 1827. Several arched openings on the ground floor on the east side of the building, which served as access to the city scales or to the meat banks of the Kronach butchers housed in the market hall , were closed in 1890 and partially replaced by rectangular windows. In 1895, a mezzanine was added to the former meeting room in the eastern part of the building .

In the course of the 20th century, several alterations and extensions were planned for administrative purposes, but only partially carried out. After the Kronach city administration moved to a new building on the market square that was built between 1972 and 1975, the old town hall has been used primarily as an event space since extensive renovation between 1998 and 2001.
