The old town hall Lüdenscheid was the central seat of the town administration of Lüdenscheid until the completion of the new town hall in 1964 . In 1874, the building was equipped with three full floors in the style of Italian Renaissance - Palazzi been completed. Arched windows, a hint of rustication on the ground floor, pilaster strips on the first and second floors, and an arched frieze under the flat roof give it its special character. By removing the original articulated windows, the overall appearance is now slightly austere. The building is located in the center of Lüdenscheid's old town and in the immediate vicinity of the Erlöserkirche . Previously, the so-called Hochgrafenhaus of the von Hymmen family was located here . From 1816 until its demolition in 1871/72, this had also served as the town hall.

During the Third Reich, over 1,000 people were imprisoned in the police cells of the Old Town Hall for political reasons, 356 of whom were identified by name, including Erwin Welke , who later became the mayor of Lüdenscheid. Decades before the construction of the new town hall, the space in the old town hall was no longer sufficient for the city administration. Most recently, it was spread across more than a dozen locations. In 1973 the cultural office of the city of Lüdenscheid and in 1979 the city ​​gallery moved into the old town hall. Today the headquarters of the communal adult education center are located in the listed building .

After years of commitment of the peace group Lüdenscheid, the initiative committee and later the association Ge Brain cells Altes Rathaus Lüdenscheid eV were on November 23, 2012 Brain cells Ge Old City Hall opened in a ceremonial ceremony. Since then, there has been a memorial in the anteroom and two detention cells in the basement of the building to document the Lüdenscheid Nazi history.
