Old rifle house

The Alte Schützenhaus is a listed building in Zofingen in Switzerland . It is located east of the old town at General-Guisan-Strasse 12, is now used as an art museum under the name Kunsthaus Zofingen and is classified as a cultural asset of national importance .

building

In 1812 the city decided to build a rifle house with a hall for events. Construction began in 1813 but was not completed until 1825. The residential development expanded so that the Schützenhaus had to be replaced by a new building on the Spitalhalde as early as 1859; the shooting range on the ground floor was bricked up. The two-story building is a free-standing rectangular building in the early classicist Louis-Seize style. A central projectile and a wrought-iron balcony on consoles structure the south facade. The windows have sturdy corner pilasters and arched openings . Flat pilasters and two chimneys decorate the ballroom on the upper floor.

Art museum

The Alte Schützenhaus houses the city's art collection as well as private collections. It specializes primarily in fine arts and modern painting, with works by artists from the region being preferred. The collection goes back to Richard and Alice Haller, who opened Zofingen's first art gallery in 1962 . In 1979 they donated 100 works to the city, which have been exhibited in the Altes Schützenhaus since 1982. The association "Art in the Old Schützenhaus" gradually expanded the collection and began in 1988 to build a sculpture garden.
