Old Castle (Saarland)
Old castle

The old castle is an abandoned high medieval hilltop castle on a narrow mountain tongue, called "Kupp" or "Hahn", about 250 meters west of the Hahn settlement, a district of the municipality of Lebach in the Saarlouis district in Saarland .

Although there is no documentary evidence, it is reasonable to assume that it is the actual ancestral seat of the Lords of Hagen, who moved their headquarters to the nearby castle " Schloss La Motte " around 1300 (the place name is possibly "Hahn") a derivation from "Hagen"). The name " Old Castle " would indicate the age difference to Castle Motte.

1075 a Diepaldus de Haga is named. The discovery of a Romanesque console stone on the castle site would fit into this period. The evidence suggests that the castle already existed in the time of the Salians .

There are no remnants of the wall, but the traces of the castle can be clearly seen in the terrain (see picture): A smaller core castle (K.) with a neck ditch (arrow) is preceded by an outer castle (V.) to the northwest . This was not separated from the main castle by artificial ditches, but was located on a headland formed by the headwaters of the Hahnenbach, from which it was in turn separated by a ditch that is now heavily flattened .

Apparently the “Old Castle” was abandoned immediately after the manor was relocated to Motte Castle and soon fell into disrepair without any external warlike influence.
