Altheim (Munich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Altheim is a place name in Munich .

location

Altheim is an area of Munich's old town southwest of the Kaufingertor of Munich's first city wall . It is located in the area of today's Altheimer Eck street.

history

The strange course of the road in this area, e.g. For example, the Altheimer Eck and the bent course Hackenstrasse-Brunnstrasse, suggests that there was a settlement here before the city expansion under Ludwig the Strict and that the street layout had to take the existing buildings into account.

The name Althaim was first mentioned in a document in 1369, mainly as part of the street name Althaimer Gässl (today Altheimer Eck). In the city's tax books, Altheim describes an area that corresponds roughly to the northern half of the block south of Altheimer Eck and Färbergraben between Damenstiftstraße and Hofstatt.

Many researchers suspect that Altheim was a settlement that existed before Munich was founded by Heinrich the Lion in 1158 and that formed the original settlement, known as Munichen after its location near a monastery courtyard . After the name changed to the new location, the old settlement was then given the name Altheim , a process that was similar to z. B. also took place at Schongau and Altenstadt.

Since there was no archaeological evidence of settlement in the Altheim area before 1158, an alternative hypothesis assumes that Altheim only emerged as a rural settlement after the construction of the city wall of Munich, which was adjacent to the city wall. However, this hypothesis does not provide an explanation for the name Altheim.

In the model of the city of Munich from Jacob Sandtner in the District of Altheim still an octagonal tower can be seen, the significance of which is unclear. According to one hypothesis, this could have been the remains of the original seat of the Lords of Altheim.

To the north of the Altheim district, around the site of today's Richard Strauss Fountain, there was a St. Nicholas Church, which dates back to the 12th century and was probably the original village church of Altheim. In the 16th century it was demolished for the construction of the Jesuit College and the Michaelskirche .
