List of domestic pigeon breeds

Old Dutch Capuchin is the name of a domestic pigeon breed . The Capuchin Doves owe their name to a resemblance to Capuchin monks with their brown frocks and hoods. This breed is one of the oldest pigeon breeds and was introduced to the Netherlands by seafarers from Bombay ( India ) at the beginning of the 16th century . The Dutch painters Jan Steen and Melchior de Hondecoeter depicted these pigeons in their paintings in the 17th century; the first animals in black and red, the last in blue with black bandages.

On January 18, 1959, the Dutch Capuchin Club was founded on the occasion of the “Avicultura Show” in The Hague . The special association Altholländischer Kapuziner Club has also existed in Germany since 1966 .

Pattern description

  • Origin: Introduced around 1500 by Dutch sailors from India , there is evidence that it has been bred in Holland since 1661 .
  • Overall impression: of medium size, of the type standing between bottlenose dolphins and field pigeons; medium high, horizontally carried body, with collar-like structure of the cervical plumage.
  • Breed characteristics:
    • Head: oblong; Forehead broad, well arched.
    • Eyes: pearl-colored, a white ring surrounds the pupil, the rest of the iris is orange; Edge red, of fine structure.
    • Bill: medium long, fine, light; Warts fine, lying smoothly. Neck: Medium length, throat well trimmed. Chest: Broad, well rounded.
    • Back: Broad between the shoulders, narrowing towards the back.
    • Wings: Not too long, closed, covering the back.
    • Tail: At most of medium length, closed, carried horizontally.
    • Legs: medium length, featherless; Nail color light.
    • Structure: plumage tightly closed and not too long; Cap high, standing upright, thick, well rounded, merging into the full nape of the neck without kinking, protruding slightly from the head and running uninterrupted into the neck collar, which leaves the front of the neck open. On the lower sides of the neck, the plumage forms an oval rosette that should run with the neck. The front of the head and eyes remain uncovered by the structure.
  • Colors: black, dun, red, yellow, blue with black bands, red-pale, yellow-pale, blue-pale; mackerel in black, red and yellow; plain white.
  • Color and drawing: All colors even, rich and pure. The colored wings of the red and yellow run out brightly, the blue and pale with the purest possible shield color. The pale ones with an intense throat, breast and bandage color. In the case of red and yellow-pale pigeons, a grayish tinge in the breast color is permitted. The drawing is the old form of the monk drawing. The head up to 1/2 cm below the eye, 7 to 12 wings, lower back, tail, belly, thighs, wedge and anal plumage are white; slightly colored drawing behind the thighs is permitted. The rest of the plumage is colored, including the inside of the cap and the belly to just before the thighs. In the tabby, the monk's drawing must be recognizable.
  • Gross faults: Long or narrow body, sloping posture, open back, loose structure, soft feather, parted neck plumage, sharply forward-leaning cap, dark or tarnished beak, poor head markings, fewer than 7 and more than 12 white wings and more than 3 white swing difference, unclean color; with tabby a lot of moldy feathers.
  • Assessment: overall impression - type - structure - color and markings - eye color.
  • Ring size: 7
