The old town is a 700 meter long street in the historic old town of Landshut and is now regarded as the center of the city and an important promenade. In addition, it was once the central traffic axis through the city and connects some of Landshut's most important sights. There is a pedestrian zone around half of its length . The old town is around 30 meters wide over large parts of its course and therefore has a character similar to a town square .

description

The old town begins at Postplatz , where Zweibrückenstrasse , the old town and Heilig-Geist-Gasse meet. The only set of traffic lights in the course of the old town is located at this intersection . As an extension of the Zweibrückenstrasse running south-east, the old town initially leads between the Heilig-Geist-Kirche to the east , the vestibule of which protrudes far into the street, and the Heilig-Geist-Stift opposite . As a result, the course of the road bends by about 50 degrees and runs straight from here in a south-south-west direction. At about the same level as this curve, the Herrengasse branches off to the east , which, like seven other streets (Börmergasse, Rosengasse, Grasgasse, Steckengasse, Schirmgasse, Kirchgasse, Spiegelgasse) creates a connection to Neustadt . The latter runs parallel to the old town and has a similar width, but ends bluntly on both sides "bluntly" at the level of Herrengasse and Spiegelgasse .

Only a few meters further south of Herrengasse, the old town opens to the west to a small, nameless square on which the so-called fool's fountain stands. Here Ländgasse branches off at a flat angle to the southwest, which runs largely parallel to the old town and meets the old town again just before its southern end. As a result, Börmergasse , Rosengasse and Grasgasse branch off to the east . The distance between the branching lanes is about 70 meters; only about 35 meters are between Börmergasse and Rosengasse. It is also noticeable that Börmergasse is by far the narrowest street connecting the old town and the new town. Between Rosengasse and Grasgasse, the very narrow Hauptwachgasse branches off to the west , which forms a connection to Ländgasse and further over the Isar footbridge to the so-called Mühleninsel . The old town bus stop , a central hub of the city bus network, and a taxi stand are also located in this area .

The pedestrian zone begins immediately south of the junction to Grasgasse. Here to the east is the historic town hall (old town 315), where the city administration has its seat to this day. Diagonally opposite, a little further south, you will find the city residence (Altstadt 79), another important sight of the city of Landshut. In the further course the Steckengasse branches off to the east , to the west the also very narrow Apothekergasse and again to the east the Schirmgasse . About fifty meters further south is the junction to Theaterstrasse on the west side , which leads through the Ländtor to the Luitpold Bridge and is also designated as a pedestrian zone. A few meters further south, the Harnischgasse , which runs parallel to Theaterstraße, branches off , which meets Ländgasse at the level of Palais Etzdorf . Exactly opposite is the junction to Kirchgasse and the famous Martinskirche (old town 219). This is affected to the north by the Kirchgasse and south by the Martinsfriedhof , the latter also having a narrow passage to the old town that is closed by a gate at night.

Diagonally across from the Martinskirche, a little further south, is the landscape house , the former seat of the Landshut rent office . There is another taxi rank here. In the further course the Spiegelgasse branches off to the east ; the pedestrian zone ends here. Only a few steps the street space opens again to the west, where the Längasse turns at a flat angle. About 30 meters further on is the junction to the Nahensteig , the only alley branching off to the east that does not create a connection to Neustadt, but ends as a dead end and is only connected to Spiegelgasse via Balsgäßchen . After another 30 meters in an exactly south-westerly direction, the old town ends at Dreifaltigkeitsplatz .

Pedestrian zone

In 1998 a pedestrian zone was set up in the old town and in some of the adjacent streets and alleys. Since June 2006 bus traffic through the pedestrian zone in the old town and in Theaterstrasse has been suspended. In addition to bicycle traffic , only taxis and - on weekdays at certain times - delivery traffic are permitted there.
