Old Town of Krakow (formerly I. Śródmieście , German inner city ) is the oldest district of the city of Krakow in Poland . This has been part of Dzielnica I Stare Miasto (district 1 old town) since 1990 .

The area of the old town is since 1933 as an ensemble under monument protection and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage " Historic Center of Krakow ".

The area is bounded by the "Planty". These denote parks that were created in the area of ​​the abandoned city fortifications. It is bounded in the south by the Wawel Castle Hill , known as “II. Zamek " (castle) or" II. Wawel ”represented a separate municipality.

It includes the medieval town, which is grouped as an oval around the main market, and Okół, which developed south of this on both sides of the Salt Road to Wieliczka .

The area of ​​the old town was registered on May 22, 1933 as "Układ urbanistyczny miasta Krakowa w granicach Plant" (Urban ensemble of the city of Krakow within the boundaries of the Planty) in the national monument list of the voivodeship.

The old town was founded in 1978 with the Wawel, the former suburb of Stradom and the formerly independent city of Kazimierz under the reference no. 29 registered as World Heritage by UNESCO (added to 29bis in 2010). An extended area, the historical city complex (historyczny zespół miasta) was declared a historical monument (Pomnik historii) on September 16, 1994 by presidential decree of Lech Wałęsa .
