Altzellen is a small hamlet in the municipality of Wolfenschiessen in the canton of Nidwalden in central Switzerland and has around 200 inhabitants in 43 houses. The place is at the foot of the Wellenberg in Engelbergertal . The Grafenort train station (municipality of Engelberg ) on the Lucerne-Stans-Engelberg railway is 2 km away .

The hamlet was mentioned in 1267 as Altzeldun and in 1327 as Altseldon . The chapel of St. Joder (Theodul) is from the 14th century and is about 900 m above sea level. Altzellen has been part of Wolfenschiessen since 1850. The school from 1879 had to be closed in 2008 because of too few children. Since then, the students have been taken to Wolfenschiessen every day by school bus. Every year in September the traditional Äschi-Schwinget takes place. In this competition the best young wrestlers from Obwalden and Nidwalden compete .
