Alvin Brown (born June 12, 1962 in Beaufort , South Carolina ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Mayor of Jacksonville , Florida , from July 1, 2011 to July 1, 2015 .

Life

Alvin Brown grew up in South Carolina and studied at Edward Waters College and Jacksonville University , where he earned his bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in business administration . During his studies, Brown did an internship with Bill Nelson , who was then a member of the United States House of Representatives . From 1994 Brown was an employee of the Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown . He also worked as a political advisor. Alvin Brown is married and has two sons.

After running as a candidate for mayoral for the city of Jacksonville, Alvin Brown received 24.7 percent of the vote in the March 22, 2011 election. As a result, there was a runoff between Brown and Republican candidate Mike Hogan on May 17, 2011, in which Brown prevailed with 50.4 percent of the vote. On July 1, 2011, he replaced John Peyton , who was no longer allowed to run after two terms. Alvin Brown was the first African American Mayor of Jacksonville. In the mayoral election in 2015 he was finally defeated by Republican Lenny Curry , who replaced Brown on July 1, 2015.
