Amalie Konsa , actually Amalie Louise konts (* February 26 . Jul / 10. March  1873 greg. In Raadi ; †  19th July 1949 in Tartu , Estonia ) was an Estonian actress and singer.

life and work

Amalie Konsa was born into a modest family to a large family. The mother was Latvian , the father Estonian . She attended school in Tartu. She had to make ends meet as a single mother early on.

Amalie Konsa was already on stage from 1886 as a chorister of the theater and opera house Vanemuine in Tartu, then Livonian . In the last decade of the 19th century she became one of the best-known and most popular actresses in the drama group of the Estonian impresario August Wiera (1853-1919) under the pseudonym Brigitta . Later Karl Menning (1874–1941) was one of its great sponsors.

From 1906 until her death in 1949 Amalie Konsa was employed (intermittently) at the Vanemuine Theater. She became one of the most famous and popular actresses in Estonia for character roles. She was also seen in 1927 in one of the first Estonian silent films, Noored kotkad (“Young Eagles”) by Theodor Luts .

Awards

In 1936 she was awarded the "Honored Actress" award by the Republic of Estonia. In 1948 she received the title of "Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR".

A bronze commemorative plaque is now attached to her house in downtown Tartu.
