The Amalienschlösschen (also called Erbprinzenschlösschen or Margravial Garden Palace ) was a building erected by the city architect Friedrich Weinbrenner in Karlsruhe .

history

The Amalienschlösschen was commissioned by the wife of Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig von Baden , Margravine Amalie, as a future summer residence and built by Friedrich Weinbrenner between 1801 and 1803 on the site of today's Nymphengarten (former Hereditary Prince's Garden ). Weinbrenner used the Villa Rotonda near Vicenza by the Italian builder Andrea Palladio as a model for the palace building .

Until 1866, the Gothic tower with an attached chapel was located in the immediate vicinity of the Amali Castle, which was built in memory of Amalie's husband, Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig. From 1891 the area around the Amalienschlösschen was converted by the then horticultural director Friedrich Ries and made accessible to the general public. The building was used as a music education institution from 1915.

During an air raid on the city in 1944, the castle was almost completely destroyed. Only part of the former staircase and parts of the building foundation are preserved. The site was converted into a public park .
