Amalrich VI. from Montfort

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amalrich VI. von Montfort ( French : Amaury de Montfort , * after 1170, † before 1213) was a French nobleman from the House of Montfort-l'Amaury as Count of Évreux and an English nobleman as Earl of Gloucester . He was a son of Amalrich V of Montfort and the Mabile of Gloucester, a daughter of William FitzRobert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester . His aunt was Isabel von Gloucester , who later became the English princess .

Amalrich's coat of arms of Montfort

When Amalrich inherited his father in the Norman county of Évreux cannot be precisely determined. Above all, the identity of an Amauri de Montfort who was named by the chronicler Roger von Hoveden as a participant in the third crusade in 1190 is unclear . In the event that it was Amalrich V, Amalrich VI would be. so only after 1190 became Count of Évreux.

In the conflict between his liege lords from the Plantagenet family and the French kingship, he remained loyal to the former. In 1195, King Philip II of France conquered the city of Evreux . In the Peace of Le Goulet , which was concluded in 1200 , Johann Ohneland, as Duke of Normandy, confirmed the cession of Évreux to the French crown, which is why Amalrich had to finally renounce his fiefdom. In return he received from Johann Ohneland a smaller part of Gloucestershire in England, including the title Earl of Gloucester , to which he could assert inheritance rights because of his parentage.

Amalrich married Agnes von Amboise († 1202), a daughter of Mr. Hugo II of Amboise and Mathilde of Vendôme, around 1198 . After Agnes died in 1202, he married Melisende von Gournay, daughter of Mr. Hugo V. von Gournay and Julia, in a second marriage around 1203. Since he had no children from either marriage, Gloucester fell back to the English crown estate on his death. With him, the Montfort-Évreux line ended while his cousins from Montfort-Leicester still made a historical appearance.
